Puerto Rico, there is a need to learn English because we have social, technological, economic, and cultural reasons that demand and require the use of the language. Puerto Rican society recognizes that the efforts to teach English in our educational systems have not gone as expected. Those who cannot establish a fluent conversation in English limit their employment opportunities since our job market, industry, and commerce require that the person be fully bilingual. Many people in Puerto Rico can translate from Spanish to English, understand the language, write it informally, and read it, but they do not speak English with correct pronunciation and fluency.
Unfortunately, many English teachers do not master the language. Some teachers do not have native English pronunciation or cannot teach the entire class in the language and provide the student with a full English immersion experience. They often resort to translating or simply mixing Spanish in their class. Others have problems with pronunciation and the proper use of verb tenses, thus confusing the student in their development years.
Many bilingual schools use English textbooks, but the teacher teaches the class in Spanish or mixes the two languages during the course. Therefore, many students in Puerto Rico graduate with the ability to translate, understand, and read English, but have problems in the conversational and written part, especially with the use of verbs and real-time conversations.
The truth is that most of our students are not motivated to learn English, because parents often have scared their children during formative years because they experienced fear when they attempted to learn it. Many lack self-confidence when it comes to language learning and fear the embarrassment that arises when they make mistakes.
Others do not have the motivation to learn English because, year after year, schools offer the same teaching and learning methodology emphasizing copying stories and grammar exercises from the board. They do not provide oral pronunciation and conversational activities so that the student can establish a simple conversation in Englis. Teachers have students conduct silent reading in the English class, and a student mayo remain silent throughout the entire class without uttering words in real-time conversational English.
Students in Puerto Rico are tired of writing the list of irregular verbs and their tenses in a notebook to memorize them. Students should learn them naturally in active conversations in a real-time format that excites and challenges the student. In the class, oral exercises in communication should be given, requiring students to speak in English using these irregular verbs while practicing proper pronunciation and usage. Another traditional mistake in the teaching method that many programs emphasize oral repetition instead of verbal communication. They also tend to ask questions that require short answers instead of inducing conversations to make force the student to think in English instead of translating a couple of words.
Another situation that affects the proper learning of English is that the rest of the students in the classroom often make fun of someone trying to pronoun a word and speak English. Anyone who has a heavy accent may be bullied at any age of learning. This situation creates insecurity in the student, and the teacher should not allow an environment where the students may feel self-conscious about participating in class. Unfortunately, these are the students who graduate from different institutions and universities in Puerto Rico. They may be working in public and private companies that require English and are able to translate from Spanish to English, they understand the language, write it informally, and read it, but they do not speak English with correct pronunciation and fluency in real-time.
Washburn School was established to be an institution where the English language is the standard of instruction and social interaction. Washburn is not a bilingual school, but a full English immersion school. All classes, except Spanish, foreign language courses such as French and History of Puerto Rico are taught in English. Washburn also offers multiple courses related to English Language Arts outside the traditional grammar and literature to all students. Students at Washburn take Conversational English, Phonetics, College Writing, Speech, and Delivery, among other classes related to perfecting the language.
Outside of class, our Washburn staff, with the exception of Spanish and foreign language teachers, should initiate conversations with students in English.
Students may be able to communicate with our teachers and faculty in Spanish or another language, but teachers should always respond in English. Teachers and staff may find it helpful to explain to students that they are speaking to and responding to them in English to give them many opportunities to perfect English with fluency and native pronunciation. Children learn English in a short timeframe with this method. It is the same reason many adults often learn English within a few months of being outside Puerto Rico in a place where Spanish is rarely spoken. Immersion is always the best policy.

¿Por qué la mayoría de los estudiantes en Puerto Rico no pueden hablar inglés con fluidez al finalizar 13 años de estudios en la escuela (K-12) o al finalizar estudios secundarios y universitarios?
En Puerto Rico se reconoce que existe la necesidad de aprender inglés ya que tenemos razones sociales, tecnológicas, económicas y culturales que demandan y requieren el uso del idioma inglés. La sociedad puertorriqueña reconoce que los esfuerzos para enseñar inglés en nuestros sistemas educativos no han sido los esperados. Aquellos que no pueden establecer una conversación en inglés limitan sus oportunidades de empleo ya que hoy en día en nuestro mercado de empleo, la industria y el comercio requieren que la persona sea completamente bilingüe.
Lamentablemente algunos maestros de inglés no dominan el idioma a perfección. Muchos maestros no tienen pronunciación nativa en inglés o no pueden dar toda la clase en el idioma y proveerle al estudiante una experiencia de inmersión total en inglés sin traducir o mezclar el español en la clase. Otros tienen problemas con la pronunciación y el uso de los verbos en sus diferentes tiempos.
Muchos colegios bilingües usan los textos en inglés pero el maestro enseña la clase en español o mezclando los dos idiomas. Por ende muchos estudiantes en Puerto Rico se gradúan con la habilidad de traducirlo, entenderlo, leerlo, pero tienen problemas en la parte conversacional y escrita, especialmente con el uso de los verbos y en conversaciones a tiempo real.
Lo cierto es que la mayoría de nuestros estudiantes no están motivados para aprender inglés, porque muchas veces los padres atemorizan a sus hijos del inglés, porque ellos también experimentaron el miedo y el temor cuando lo querían aprender. Estos jóvenes carecen de confianza en ellos mismos en lo que respecta al aprendizaje del idioma.
Otros no tienen la motivación para aprender inglés porque las escuelas año tras año ofrecen la misma metodología de enseñanza y aprendizaje dando énfasis en copiar de la pizarra cuentos y ejercicios de gramática y no ofrecen ejercicios orales de pronunciación para que el estudiante pueda establecer una conversación simple en inglés. También en nuestras escuelas permiten que el maestro ofrezca a los estudiantes lecturas silenciosas en la clase de inglés y lo único que éstos aprenden es a permanecer silenciosos durante toda la clase.
El estudiante en Puerto Rico está cansado de escribir la lista de verbos irregulares y sus tiempos en una libreta para aprendérselos de memoria, cuando se debe dar la pronunciación de estos verbos en los diferentes tiempos en un formato practico, real y que emocione el estudiante. En la clase se debe dar ejercicios orales en conversación exigiendo que los estudiantes hablen en inglés utilizando estos verbos. Otro error tradicional en el método de enseñanza es dar énfasis en la repetición oral en lugar de la comunicación oral y la tendencia a hacer preguntas que requieren contestaciones cortas y breves en lugar de inducir la conversación.
Otra situación que afecta el aprendizaje adecuado del inglés es que el resto de los estudiantes en el salón de clases se burlan cuando alguno trata de pronunciar y hablar en inglés. Esta situación crea una inseguridad en el estudiante y el maestro no debe permitir en el salón que los estudiantes se sientan cohibidos de participar en clase.
Lamentablemente son esos estudiantes que se gradúan de las diferentes instituciones y universidades de Puerto Rico. Los que actualmente están trabajando en empresas públicas y privadas quizás puedan traducirlo, entender el idioma, escribirlo de manera informal, y leerlo , pero no hablan inglés con pronunciación correcta y con fluidez.
Washburn School fue establecida con el propósito de ser una institución en la cual el idioma inglés es el estándar de instrucción e interacción social.
Washburn no es una escuela bilingüe, si no un colegio de inmersión total en inglés. Todas las clases, excepto español, cursos de idiomas extranjeros como Francés e Historia de Puerto Rico se imparten en inglés. Fuera de la clase, nuestro personal de Washburn, con la excepción de los profesores de español y de idiomas extranjeros, debe iniciar conversaciones con los estudiantes en inglés.
Los estudiantes quizas podrán comunicarse con nuestros maestros y facultad en espanol u otro idioma, pero los profesores siempre deben responder en inglés. A los profesores y al personal les puede resultar útil explicarles a los estudiantes que les están hablando y que les están respondiendo en inglés con la intención de darles muchas oportunidades de perfeccionar el inglés con fluidez y pronunciación nativa.
