Washburn School in Ponce Seniors Celebrate Early University Acceptances in October

Enmanuel Hernandez Espinosa received $172,000 in academic scholarships at Iowa State University, Seton Hill University, University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and Loyola University Chicago. Alejandro Negrón Calderón was accepted into the 4th best Astronomy and Astrophysics program in the nation at Embry-Riddle University in Florida with a scholarship; Alanis Colón Flores was accepted into the #1 Design and Entrepreneurship program in the nation at SCAD in Georgia; and Marwa Rasheed was accepted into the Biomedical Engineering program at the University of Memphis, with additional acceptances at Methodist University in Tennessee, University of Denver State Metropolitan, and Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania. Valeria Negrón Alvarado adds with acceptances in Northern Illinois University, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Emory and Henry University, and Alfred University in New York with a $108,000 scholarship in her path towards Medicine. In December Carlos Felipe Garcia Luna received a $116,000 scholarship from Loyola University Chicago, a $108,000 scholarship from Loyola University New Orleans, and offers of admission from Marymount University in Virginia, Nova Southeastern University in Florida, and Regis University in Massachusetts.

First Acceptance for Washburn School's Class of 2025 in Ponce!

Congratulations to Alejandro Negrón Calderón, our first Senior '25 student to receive an early acceptance this year into the Bachelor's program in Astronomy and Astrophysics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, home to the 4th best Astronomy program in the nation according to US News!

With an SAT score in the top 10% nationwide 🇺🇸—directly from Washburn in Ponce, Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 (in 11th grade 👀)—he has the opportunity to earn even more acceptances. Ironically, his acceptance letter says, "Forever an Eagle," a perfect detail for our Washburn Eagles!

Alejandro was our 2022 Student of the Year, received the Board of Trustees Award last year, and achieved the highest scores in the global NWEA Map Growth tests in English and Science—ranking in the top 1% (99th percentile) worldwide for several years. In 2021, he also earned a certification in astronomy from the Star Academy in Arecibo.

Alanis Colón Flores

Congratulations to Alanis N. Colón Flores, Senior Class of 2025 at Washburn School! Alanis has been part of our family since Pre-K in 2012, and today we celebrate her acceptance to the prestigious SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) in Savannah, Georgia, USA 🇺🇸, which also has a campus in Lacoste, France 🇫🇷, where students can study abroad.

Marwa Rasheed

Congratulations to Marwa Rasheed, our second senior from the Class of '25 to receive multiple early acceptances this year 🚀! Marwa has been accepted into the Bachelor’s program in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Memphis in Tennessee, Physical Therapy at Methodist University in North Carolina, Biomedical Engineering at the New York Institute of Technology, University of Denver (State Metropolitan) and for Education at Robert Morris University in Pennsylvania.

Marwa has been a dedicated Washburn student since 4th grade! We hope this is just the beginning of many more acceptances in her exciting college journey!

Enmanuel Hernández Espinosa

He been accepted into Iowa State University and Loyola University Chicago, securing over $172,000 in scholarships. Enmanuel joined Washburn School after arriving from Cuba and began English classes through the Washburn English Institute, quickly advancing his language skills. His hard work paid off with SAT scores in the top 90 to 99 percentiles worldwide, placing him above many native English speakers. He also achieved the 91st percentile in Math on the NWEA in 11th grade and ranks in the top 25% for English reading comprehension.

Additionally, Enmanuel is one of the top three chess players in the regional LAEC senior division—a recognition he also achieved in national competitions as a child in Havana. With applications to several other universities, we look forward to more exciting news of Enmanuel's college journey. These are the sixth and seventh early acceptances for Washburn’s Class of 2025 this month.

Valeria Negrón Alvarado

Valeria Sofía Negrón Alvarado with Four Early University Acceptances and a Presidential Scholarship!

She has now been accepted to Alfred University in New York with a Presidential Scholarship of $108,000 and Notre Dame of Maryland University, adding to her previous acceptances at Northern Illinois University and Emory & Henry University in Virginia that we had previously shared. Valeria plans to study Biology/Biomedical Sciences on her path to a medical career. A Washburn student for 11 years, Valeria excels academically with a 4.00 GPA and outstanding scores in both the SAT and NWEA MAP Growth tests, placing in the top 11% globally in English and top 20% in Math.

Carlos Felipe García Luna has already earned 5 early acceptances:

Carlos ranked in the top 7% globally in math (NWEA MAP) out of 11th grade and had a 94th percentile SAT. He’s also a math champ leading our Math team to success outside school!
